My Advice for Navigating a Career Transition During Menopause

First of all, don’t run away! Menopause is a natural phase every person with ovaries goes through—your mother, sister, and favorite aunt included! While we openly discuss the challenges of teenage years, joke about “mommy brain,” and the cravings of a pregnant women, menopause often remains unspoken. Yet, like puberty, it reshapes you physically, emotionally, and mentally.

For some (of us), it begins as early as 40, but on average, menopause hits around 52. If your symptoms are mild—great for you! But if your body and mind feel unfamiliar, welcome to the club—you have my full empathy.

Menopause can be a time of profound reflection and reassessment, often sparking a desire for better work-life balance, new challenges, or more meaningful work. This can lead to career transitions, which might feel daunting but are absolutely possible. So, what can you do?

  • Take care of your body: Fuel yourself with nutritious food, keep active, and prioritize sleep.
  • Take care of your mind: You’ve gained wisdom and experience; this isn’t the first time you’ve had to pivot. You still have so much to offer. You may need to slow down at times, but you can absolutely do this!

Use your hard-earned wisdom to focus on what you love and lift what you can. Remember, it’s never too late for change—or to celebrate a new beginning!
